Our Network
and Data Center
The Planet DC
The Planet currently owns and operates three state-of-the-art data
centers in Dallas, Texas, offering complete redundancy in power, HVAC,
fire suppression, network connectivity, and security. With over 83,000
sq ft of raised floor between the three facilities, The Planet has
an offering to fit any need. Our product offerings include private
caged suites, cabinets, half-cabinets, tri-cabinets, and rackspace
by the Unit. The datacenter facility sits atop multiple power grids
driven by TXU electric, with PowerWare UPS battery backup power and
dual diesel generators onsite. Our HVAC systems are condenser units
by Data Aire to provide redundancy in cooling coupled with ten managed
backbone providers. Twelve more third party backbone providers are
available in the building via cross connect. Fire suppression includes
a pre-action dry pipe system including VESDA (Very Early Smoke Detection
Apparatus) with over 700 smoke detectors between the two facilities.
The network architecture utilizes the Enterprise routing
and switching engines from Juniper and Cisco. The Planet utilizes
Juniper M20 routers as border routers, Cisco 6500 series switches
in our distribution layer and Cisco 6500 switches in our aggregation
layers, and Cisco 3500 and 2900 series switches at the customer layer.
The network is fully meshed and redundant with 11 backbone providers.
The Savvis DC
SAVVIS has engineered its network around a single platform - AS3561
- which enables one global IP backbone, rather than regional Autonomous
Systems stitched together. That means that once data gets on the network,
it’s a single BGP hop to the global network node nearest its
destination. This minimizes the number of router hops and reduces
the risk of downtime when traffic has to traverse multiple networks.
The SAVVIS Global AS3561 IP backbone has peering connections with
13 Tier 1 US and five Tier 1 European backbone providers. SAVVIS has
built new OC-3 [STM-1] and OC-12 [STM-4] for a total of 26GBps connections
to its largest direct connect peers, thus providing faster and more
reliable access to their networks. With these enhancements, SAVVIS
is able to allocate sufficient bandwidth to each peer, aiding in effective
capacity planning.
